Platypus Ensemble & Proton String Quartet
Rite of Passage (2008)

Expanding the boundaries of jazz composition Sid Hille started composing for a double quartet setting, jazz quartet and string quartet, in 2006.
The Platypus Ensemble joined forces with the Proton String Quartet, played several gigs during 2006-2008 and released this exceptional CD in 2008.

Rite of Passage brings to mind the creative fusion experiments of the beginning 70’s. The music on this CD unites the spontaneity of jazz expression with counterpoint and the orchestral habitus of classical music. The fusion element is enhanced by the fact that on some tracks Hille plays the Fender Rhodes electric piano spiced up with a wah-wah pedal.
